Why Lashes Fall Out? My Remedies for Eyelash Loss

Similarly to hair, eyelashes fall out every day. If you lose around two or three lashes a day, there’s no need to worry – this is absolutely normal. However, when you notice lashes falling like leaves from trees in autumn, you must see a doctor. Lash loss may be the symptom of serious diseases such as hyperthyroidism, eye problems, ciliary blepharitis, conjunctivitis and folliculitis, alopecia areata. Hormonal imbalance, menopause, chemotherapy or huge vitamin deficiency are the possible causes of lash loss, too. If you spot some lesions on eye skin, you may deal with follicular mite – parasite affecting hair follicles, lashes and pores. Lash loss may be the consequence of wrong beauty care e.g. wearing eyelash extensions or using a lash curler too often, let alone using it the wrong way. If you want to know other causes of lash loss and remedies for the problem, this post is for you!

Why eyelashes fall out?

The most common causes of lash loss include:

  • Using improper beauty products
The condition of lashes gets poorer because of a mascara that doesn’t come off easily thus requires harsh rubbing during makeup removal, especially when you use a makeup remover which isn’t oily enough. When it comes to lash breakage, it is caused by sleeping with makeup on.
  • Taking some medication
  • Allergy (to cosmetics or contact lenses)
  • Weather conditions
Weather may have a destructive impact on eyelashes. Factors such as frost, the sun, wind or sudden temperature changes may drastically worsen the state of lashes. To protect them from the harmfulness of weather conditions, you must keep them moisturised. Use a specially-designed eyelash serum or a mild lip balm. Before applying the product, do an allergy test on a less sensitive skin fragment.
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Infections, ciliary blepharitis, folliculitis
  • Free radicals (cigarettes and pollution)
  • Poor diet
  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Eye surgeries
  • False eyelash extensions
Improper application of false lashes is another reason for lash loss. Even though falsies look spectacularly, they leave natural lashes damaged. That is why you should let your lashes take a break between lash extension sessions. To make things worse, you often damage lashes at home e.g. by using curlers which break them.

Tried & tested remedies for lash loss

Castor oil treatment

Castor oil is an old yet effective way to repair lashes. Thanks to moisturising power, it really makes lashes stronger. How to use it? Apply it to lashes every evening after taking all makeup products off. To make it easier, use a lash comb or a used mascara wand to spread the oil evenly. Make sure you wash the used wand first. Your lashes will get better after just a few weeks with a castor oil treatment.

Eyelash and eyebrow serums

Ready-made lash-regenerating and growth-stimulating products are gel-like so the application is extremely easy. I recommend them to those of you who have spotted thinning lashes e.g. because of eyelash extensions, curlers or chemotherapy.

Eyelash and eyebrow serums are available at drugstores. We’re spoilt for choice. The effectiveness depends on the ingredients. A high-quality serum should be rich in cucumber, pomegranate or pumpkin seed extract, green tea and vitamins A, B12.

For everyday lash care, feel free to make use of a regular lip balm. Just make sure it’s colorless and scentless. Close your eyes and spread it on lashes and near them. Use your finger, a cotton pad or mascara wand (clean and dry). This lets you moisturise and boost shine.

Gentle makeup removal

Fancy knowing another thing that keeps lashes from falling out? It’s removing makeup in a gentle way. The way you take makeup products off really has an influence on the health of your lashes. That is why you mustn’t rub your eyes with the cotton pad! To remove eye makeup, soak a cotton pad in a remover so it’s wet and gently press it to the eyelid.

After a second, the mascara will come off easily. I suggest using oil-based removers which quickly dissolve mascaras. You must try out bi-phase removers if you’ve never used them. Always remember to shake them before use to let both phases blend so that you can remove (even waterproof) makeup easily, quickly and effectively.
